TriBallistic & Phuket International Academy Triathlon Series

(Race 2 of 4)

Location: Indigo Pearl Resort, Nai Yang, Phuket.

Date:  Sunday 31st May 2009

After storms and heavy rain on the Thursday and Friday prior to race day it was feared any chance of a swim may be cancelled due to rough seas and also the possibility of cutting the bike course short for safety reasons, however the gods were looking down on us and the sky cleared and the sun came out and the seas calmed to almost a millpond.

The first race of the day was the Splash and Dash race with a swim of 60m, bike of 1.5km and a run of 850m. The race was initially led by Melanie Preen and Sophie Findlay after the swim however a determined Lilli Daefler produced a storming bike ride and powered to the run to then hold the lead all the way through the run and even managed to produce a sprint to the finish line. The girls dominated the race with the first boy crossing the line in 4th place overall.

The second race was the Junior Sprint race which consisted of a swim of 275m, bike of 6km and a run of 1.85km. Again it was a girl Teishca Jones that dominated the race from start to finish. Closely followed by Clement Opportune. The competition was fierce for the rest of the pack as they jostled for the remaining positions as so to claim a prize. The junior team race was a battle throughout for all of them with positions changing with each discipline but eventually the Flash and Lightening (Lena Daefler, Chloe Finlay, Olivia) team storming over the line with a sprint finish.

The final race of the day was the Adults Senior Sprint made up of an 800m swim, 22km bike and a 7.5km run. As the adults race started the sun started to shine more and in so doing up when the heat producing a very tough race for all the competitors. This time it was a male who dominated the race Bryan Hoare who was a defending champion from the previous races in the series and he led the race from start to finish. Second and third spot was a battle for position between Chris Sonderby and Richard Schildernect. The ladies race was not such a close fought battle but even so produced a great result for Michelle Hossack who again produced a fantastic run and also for Tasneem Allie who had travelled down from Bangkok. The team event had a large contingent this time with over 15 teams competing with teams from the venue sponsor (Indigo Pearl,) the Marriott Hotel and also RPM health club taking part. The team race was eventually won by an all Thai team from Bang Tao racing under the name of Phuket International Academy. The Masters race (50+years) was dominated by Bangkok Triathlete Michael Lyons who has been on a roll this year since qualifying for the half Ironman world championships.

TriBallistic would like to congratulate all athletes no matter of age and position for taking part and making the event another day to remember and for keeping the fun spirit of Triathlon alive and kicking in Phuket. Also thank you to all our sponsors for making the day yet another memorable one
